After surgery and months of taxing therapies, breast cancer survivors have a long road ahead of them. Pain, fatigue and inflammation make it difficult for survivors to want to get back into their exercise routine. A new study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology shows that yoga may be beneficial for breast cancer survivors by relieving those symptoms.

The study looked at whether Iyengar yoga intervention designed for breast cancer survivors, could decrease inflammation and fatigue. Study subjects practiced yoga twice a week for 12 weeks, and were encouraged to do at least 25 minutes of practice at home each day.

What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar Yoga, more commonly known as Hatha Yoga, is a practice where the emphasis is placed on controlling your breath through a serious of positions and postures. It’s been known to help develop strength, mobility and stability.

At the end of the 12-week yoga intervention, the researchers noted that the subjects had reduced symptoms of inflammation and fatigue. “These findings suggest that a targeted yoga program may have beneficial effects on inflammatory activity in this patient population, with potential relevance for behavioral and physical health,” says the study.

Why yoga may work

Yoga focuses on deep breathing, which has been tied to reducing stress and lessening inflammation and fatigue.

Being in a group with other survivors builds social support and can help with the health process.

Instructors can tailor the practice to each individual. Even if one has never taken a yoga class before, the positions and postures are simple to adapt and modify no matter what the pupil's level of experience may be.

Yoga practice is about you. You don’t have to do everything perfectly to gain the benefits of yoga. Small steps in the right direction just may help ease inflammation and fatigue for breast cancer survivors.
